Koofteh Nokhodchi - Chickpea Meatballs in Tomato Sauce with Black Lemons
Koofteh Nokhodchi is flavour-packed Chickpea Meatballs in Tomato Sauce with Black Lemons. This is a beautiful Persian recipe and I created my version inspired by OPIHR Gin’s Black Lemon Edition.
The star ingredient in OPIHR’s Black Lemon Gin as well as Koofteh Nokhodchi are gorgeous, aromatic dried black lemons. They are also known as loomi and in Farsi, we call them limoo Amani. They are actually sun-dried limes. You may be familiar with the yellow version if you aren’t new to Persian cuisine. These black lemons are dried even longer, which deepens their distinct tangy citrus flavour and gives them a beautiful black colour.
There are many different meatball recipes in Persian and Middle Eastern cuisine. Each region in Iran has their own recipe, involving completely other ingredients and spices. This particular one comes from Esfahan and can be served with rice or bread, as I did in the pictures below.
Among other popular Persian dishes, it is also included in my Classic Persian Recipes E-Book.
